Embarking on the journey of sanding, refinishing, and staining your hardwood floors? Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you know what to expect during this transformative process.

Step 1: Consultation

The first step is a detailed consultation to assess the current condition of your floors and to understand your preferences regarding the desired color and finish.

Step 2: Preparation

Preparation involves clearing the room of furniture and cleaning the floor to ensure it is ready for the transformation that lies ahead.

Step 3: Sanding

The sanding stage is where the old finish is removed and any imperfections are smoothed out, creating a clean slate for the staining process.

Step 4: Staining

Here, you choose a stain that matches your style and the décor of your home, setting the stage for the new look of your floors.

Step 5: Refinishing

During the refinishing step, a protective coat is applied to the floors, enhancing both their appearance and durability.

Step 6: The Final Reveal

After the final coat is applied and dried, you'll be introduced to your transformed floors, ready to enhance the ambiance of your home.

What to Expect

  • Duration: The entire process typically spans 3-5 days. Each coat applied during the refinishing process necessitates a drying time of 12 to 24 hours. After the final coat, a waiting period of 24 hours is essential before moving furniture back in to ensure the best results and longevity of your new floors. However, rugs with abrasive backings should wait 3-4 days before being placed on the newly refinished floors.

  • Accessibility: It is crucial to note that the floors will be OFF LIMITS during the drying time of each coat to prevent any imperfections and to ensure a smooth, flawless finish. Planning alternative accommodations or pathways in your home during this period will be necessary.

  • Environment: To control dust and maintain the quality of the air, air units will be turned off during the process. Plastic barriers will be erected to shield unaffected areas, ensuring a clean and controlled environment.

  • Dust Management: While we take every precaution to manage dust — including turning off air units, setting up plastic barriers, and vacuuming the work areas — it is important to note that eliminating dust entirely is not possible due to the nature of the work involved. A certain amount of dust is a normal and expected part of the refinishing process. We recommend planning for a cleaning service post-completion to ensure your home is dust-free and shining, ready to complement your newly transformed floors.

  • Maintenance: Once the transformation is complete, you'll receive guidance on how to maintain the beauty and longevity of your floors, helping you enjoy the renewed look for years to come.
